5 Must-Know Outdoor Rug Facts

With the lines between inside and out blurring, home decor needs are evolving. The outdoors have become an extension of our interiors, while living spaces now require more durability and performance. Here’s everything you need to know about design’s sought-after outdoor-friendly materials.

Jaipur Living‘s Rebecca collection is handcrafted from recycled PET.

Material World: Form, Function & Feel

Today’s outdoor rugs are more than utilitarian—they're designed to perform in the elements while offering tactile beauty underfoot. Thanks to their hydrophobic nature, polyester and polypropylene are the most popular fibers for outdoor rugs as they repel water and help prevent molding and rot. While both fibers are man-made, each has its own benefits.

Polypropylene is known for its colorfast properties and resistance to moisture, stains, and UV rays. Its solution-dyed fibers keep colors rich, bold, and fade-resistant. Polyester is prized for its softness and plush texture. While slightly less resilient in high-traffic zones, it brings indoor-level comfort outside.

Newer to the scene is recycled PET, a sustainable standout with fibers made from plastic water bottles. Once plastic bottles are melted down, fibers are extruded and spun to mimic natural yarn, like wool. All Jaipur Living rugs fabricated with recycled PET are handmade and boast high-quality standards.

Construction Zone: Handmade & Weather-Resistant

While most outdoor rugs are power loomed, they can be crafted using any method, including hand-knotted, handwoven, braided, flat-woven, and hooked—a process similar to hand-tufting. Here’s an intro into each method:

  • Hand-Knotted: Made from individually made knots tied one row at a time on a vertical loom, hand-knotted rugs take artisans around 240 days to craft by hand.
  • Handwoven: Also called hand-loomed rugs, these styles are made on hand-operated looms. Weavers use a rod to drive fibers vertically across the loom and back again.
  • Hand-Tufted & Hand-Hooked: In hand-tufted rugs, yarn is hand-punched through a prewoven fabric with a specialized tufting device. For hand-hooked rugs, there is no shearing after the tufting process, resulting in an uncut, looped pile.
  • Flat-Woven: Flat-woven rugs, or hurries and kilims, have a much flatter finish thanks to their warp and weft threads, which run perpendicular to the other.
  • Power Loomed: Made on electrically powered looms, these rugs feature a wide range of colors, complex designs, and shorter lead times. They also tend to be easy care because they are often made with synthetic fibers like polyester, polypropylene, and recycled PET.

These various constructions ensure that no matter your outdoor vibe—boho and breezy, coastal chic, or modern and minimal—there’s a rug that fits both your style and the space’s demands.

Traffic Report: High Performance

Outdoor rugs are naturally designed to withstand more wear and tear, making them ideal for high-traffic areas as well as kid and pet-friendly spaces. However, understanding traffic flow will help determine which construction and fiber are best for your space.

High-traffic areas (like patios with dining sets or heavy foot traffic) call for polypropylene or recycled PET—both are sturdy, resilient, and easy to clean. Polyester’s plush character means it can wear down more quickly and lose texture faster in high-traffic spaces.

Cozy corners (like lounging nooks or poolside spots) benefit from softer polyester rugs, which offer comfort but may compress more quickly under frequent use.

For households with kids or pets, be careful of hooked or looped styles, as they are more prone to damage from dog and cat claws. Opt for cut-pile or flat-woven styles to minimize snags.

In Situ: Ensuring Outdoor Longevity

With proper placement and care, outdoor rugs typically last five to seven years, although climate plays a big role. In humid environments, moisture can reduce a rug’s lifespan if not managed properly.

Insider’s Tip: Use a weather-resistant rug pad. Outdoor pads promote airflow, preventing water from getting trapped between the rug and the wood or cement below. This reduces mildew, allowing the rug to breathe and expanding its lifespan. And remember, there are different rug pads designed for both indoor and outdoor use!

Clean & Care

One of the biggest perks of indoor/outdoor rugs? They’re made to be lived with. Always check the care instructions specific to your rug’s material and construction, these rugs tend to be easy to maintain.

In general, blot stains immediately and use a mild soap mixed with equal parts white vinegar and water to clean. The beauty of indoor/outdoor rugs is that they can be hosed off outside and hung to dry. Ensure your rug is completely dry before placing it back in its proper home.
