Weaving A Masterpiece

With a focus on ethical production and uncompromised quality, Jaipur Living brings together the 2500-year-old weaving tradition with contemporary and classic rug designs. In a meticulous 10-step process, crafting a single hand-knotted rug takes months to complete. With some designs boasting over one million knots, this intricate artistry and precision are upheld by a dedicated community of 50,000+ highly skilled artisans in India.

Carding and Spinning

In the hands of the Katwaris, our handpicked wool becomes yarn through a process of layering strands, eliminating dirt and knots, and incorporating centuries of Indian heritage using a charka, a traditional spinning wheel.

Dyeing

The dyeing process involves winding yarn onto a wheel-like frame, dipping it into hot dye vats to absorb its color, and then drying it in the sun. At Jaipur Rugs, we offer a palette of over 3,000 colors for our yarn.

Weaving

Adhering to an ancient Persian tradition, our weavers dedicate up to a year to hand-knotting their designs at the loom, carefully crafting each pattern with detailed precision.

Finishing

Washers carefully apply water and a mild cleansing solution to remove dirt from carpets. Each pass helps eliminate impurities while simultaneously strengthening the knots beneath.

Gultarash, which means “finding the flower,” was originally used to make flower patterns more prominent through a high-low effect. Today, it is applied to accentuate motifs and create rich textural effects.

Persian Knot

This technique involves wrapping the yarn once around a warp thread and then passing it underneath the adjacent warp strand, resulting in a delicate weave.

Tibetan Knot

In this Tibetan weaving technique, yarn is wrapped around two warp threads and a rod. Once the rod is covered with yarn loops, it is cut to form the pile and then removed.
